Chapter 8

As Devin drove to the precinct, the earlier events of the night replayed in his head, analyzing his actions and the consequences. He could have done better. He should have.

Exactly what Thompson snapped a short while later, after he finally remembered the duffel in his trunk with jeans and a t-shirt and changed out of his Roman costume for forever. Thompson spit fire at him in the conference room. “There was an idiot here in lock up dressed like Scooby Doo, ranting about how a policeman in a dress nicked his coke and attacked him in an alley. Sound familiar?”

“Yes,” Devin ground out. “I attended a party at the home of Janet Nelson as the stripper with Samantha Yardley with the intention of finding useful information. Which I did obtain by the end of the night.”

Thompson still looked ready to pistol whip him, though her rank matched his. He had betrayed her trust, and when she risked her life, she wanted to be sure he’d end the threat, no emotions consulted. “Evidently he’s Janet Nelson’s ex. She bailed the loser out about twenty minutes ago. It won’t be long before they put together the pieces.”

“Shit. I was with Sam. I need them to trust her. She’s our DEA informer.”

“Shit is right. Shit. Shit. Shit. We’ve put in too many hours on this case to let the bust slip away. And why didn’t you find out sooner about her informing on her family?”

He shrugged. “We’re close, though. Sam said the shipment arrives at Putnam on Friday afternoon and will need re-shipping the following Monday. Deale asked her to personally deliver the packages to and from her.”

“Great. We’ll wire her up, cover her during the exchanges and move in as soon as Deale accepts them.” Thompson focused in the distance, no doubt counting up how many officers and guns were needed for the bust.

“I haven’t run this by Sam yet. She’ll be in danger and probably won’t be able to wear a vest.” Devin hated himself for hesitating, but there were issues he had to consider especially where Sam was concerned. “If anything happens to Sam, I’ll never forgive myself.”

“It’s the only way, MacGregor. We’ll keep her safe.” She gave him a level stare. He had to believe and trust her.

“We have to.” Devin thumped a fist on the conference room table, knocking over his coffee. Black liquid ran off the side of the table untouched.

“Wait a minute,” Thompson said, studying his face. “This is personal now, isn’t it? You had sex with her,” she accused, her face red and frown thunderous.

He nodded, ready to stop pretending he didn’t notice Thompson’s hints and suggestive flashes of skin.

She jumped out of her seat. “You’re not getting out of a fight with me now. Meet me in the gym,” she commanded with clenched fists before stalking away.

After Devin cleaned up the spilled coffee, he sat by himself watching an occasional officer pass through a hallway a floor above with glass walls lining one side of the room.
